Option 1: Prepare a short statement of interest, no more than 600 words describing your specific interest in Transit, Data Visualization, or other related topic. You can include any relevant previous experience or research.

Option 2: A figure you made showing an example of data visualization. This can be anything you have done previously or something new for this application. Submissions like maps, diagrams, graphs, and plots are good ideas.

Update #2 (15-08-2018)

We would like to thank all applicants for taking the time and effort. We have just sent e-mails to all those who have applied confirming their application status, and wether they have been accepted to attend the workshop.

I applied but did not receive a confirmation e-mail. What do I do?

Please do check your junk inbox first. We only replied to the e-mails which were sent to the account. If you still can’t find an answer, please feel free to e-mail us and we’d be happy to do a second check.

I got accepted, but am not sure I can attend all three days!

That is a very unfortunate situation. We asked all accepted candidates to sign and send back an obligatory Attendance Agreement which states that attending all three days is important. Please think of the other participants before signing if you are unsure over your ability to commit fully. And feel free to drop us an e-mail with your specific situation.

Update #1 (05-08-2018)

Do you plan to attend the workshop?

We have received a record number of fascinating applications. As the number of questions and applicants have increased substantially over the weekend we have extended the deadline until the midnight of Saturday, the 11th of August, 2018.

If you have not already submitted an application by way of one of our two options using the e-mail address, please do so. Filling out the google form is not an application. As some of the submission are incomplete, we encourage you to resend your application if you feel like it can be improved.

We maintain a competitive application process to ensure fairness and a rewarding experience for all of our diverse participants. Therefor we will rank submissions and only select a small number based on the following criteria:

  • Content
  • Relevant Experience and/or Relevant skills
  • Application Completeness and Professionalism

The workshop will be held in AUC tahrir campus on August 27, 28 and 29; which is right after the Eid Vacation. It will be everyday from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm and will consists of a series of presentations intertwined by hands-on studio work. Bring your laptops, pens and notepads! We hope to output tangible stories and visualisations. Attendance of the three days in full is mandatory, so we will ask you to commit accordingly.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

I chose Option 1, the short statement of interest. What makes a powerful application?

Please include why you want to attend the workshop, what you bring in terms of past experience, tools and skills, and motivation, and what you hope to achieve through it. Good storytelling is big bonus. Note that the workshop will be divided between learning and producing original and impressive visualizations of newly collected public transportation data. The data includes route traces from Cairo’s public bus system. Think of the workshop as part hackathon where we will compete in teams to use the data in the most creative and influential way, and tell the most engaging story.

I chose Option 2, showing an example of data visualization. What makes a powerful application?

Please include a description of what it is showing and how you made it. Perhaps mention which software programs or coding languages were used in the process. Please do not send portfolios, but choose a map, diagram, graph, or plot and explain your thought process and what story it is supposed to tell. Don’t worry if it is a simple chart made in Excel, the story and the message is what matters work. The figure should be original work, done previously or for the purposes of this application. You need to be able to recreate it given new data (like during our workshop).

Can I only attend part of the workshop? Can I come the last two days? or after work?

Unfortunately not. The workshop requires full attendance for the duration of the entire three days. No exceptions. We ask those accepted for a signed commitment agreement. If commiting will be difficult, please let us know so that we can offer your place to someone who can guarantee attendance. Space is limited.

Can you tell me more about the workshop? Do I need to be tech savvy? Do I need to speak English?

We are currently finalising the workshop design with the help of the Civic Data Design Lab at MIT, so will send out a more detailed description and agenda within the next weeks. Participants are likely to be divided in groups and work on different streams of data visualisation. We aim to mix and match different and diverse skill sets together to create an environment of exchange, learning and co-production. While the presentations will be given in English, special attention and effort will be given by the TfC and Takween team members during the workshop to ensure everybody and benefit and participate.

I did not receive a confirmation e-mail for my application!

That means that we are slower than usual. Every received application will receive a confirmation of receipt. Once we choose final applicants, we will notify all applicants with the status of their application.
