In Greater Sousse, Tunisia, Transport for Cairo supported local public transport stakeholders, including STS and operators of TNRP services, to build a robust evidence base for planning and decision-making. Over the course of 6 months, our team deployed RouteLab, TfC’s in-house data collection and management software suite, to capture consistent, high-quality information on passenger travel behavior, user experience, and bus service operations.
The core output was a comprehensive and reliable public transport database designed to support transport modeling of ridership and travel patterns across all bus transport modes in Greater Sousse, covering both STS bus services and the TNRP modes operating within the city.
Our role and scope of work
We reviewed available datasets and documents to compile an initial list of bus and taxi terminals and routes.
We managed field identification surveys at terminals to verify routes, correct gaps and inconsistencies, and document additional routes discovered on the ground.
We refined the temporal and geographic sampling approach to ensure representative coverage across locations and time periods.
We managed the implementation of surveys on public transport services and passengers, including frequency surveys, onboard surveys, and passenger surveys across the identified routes.
We analyzed the collected data to produce insights relevant to planning and modeling, including network characteristics (passenger and vehicle flows, network coverage), trip lengths and fares, passenger travel patterns, and passenger experience.
We processed and aggregated the data into the formats required for integration into the transport model.
